Post  scottrod 16/11/09, 08:24 pm

been looking into doing the 1.6 dohc convertion into my swift gti.
its already chiped, 4 branch manifold, air filter, stainless exaust so got as much as i can out of it already.
ive found out the infomation to do the convetion but just wonderd if you realy notice the difference?

ive alsways has suzuki samurais, and ive fitted a gti engine to the one and a 1.6 8v to the other, both noticable, but i never mesed about witht the engines, ie changing heads etc.

all help and info would be greatfull and wil post pics etc if i got threw with it, thanks scott.

i think every1 u ask will say stick with the 1.3 forget the 1.6. its weaker and cant rev as high.

and theres alot more mods for the gti engine
bigger tb
cams
flywheel
crankpulley
Piston (high/Low compression)
intake manifold

betta and cheaper 2 buy a turbo for it, even low boost on standard engine, especially if u can do it yourself

wil start spending money on this one over time then i think, thanks scott.

its cheaper to put a turbo on at like on a standard engine on low boost and you wud get more power than na
if u want high boost then it comes at a high cost
there 2 completely seperate routes

im goin turbo soon as i get off my ass and do sumthing about it, start collecting after xmas i think.

yeah right
if your on a tight budget its either n/a or turbo if you want to do one after the other then it will be very very expencive

The amount of money its gunna cost to mod a 1.6 in, you'd get better and cheaper results by doin a low boost turbo.

Hi,

You can port and polish your cylinder head. If you are going to turbo it, you can just take cast line on inlet side but do proper job exhaust side. You can match exhaust port to a gasket. This will make your turbo work bit better.

I don't know where Garndi is at the moment. Is he gone back to Oz?

Hi Steve,

Do you de-shroud valves inlet side or both? Do you then re-measure combustion chamber to suit? I have a freind who is engine tuner/builder/modifyer, he takes a lot longer to do all the work. Swiftmotorsports can tell you that the guy I know is one of the best.

For NA, you onlu just need to take cast line out of mk2 head. Then may be match exhaust port to a gasket you will be using. If you start to modify chamber, you will need to skim it to bring back CR.
http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/madzuki/

Now, this weblink above will show you some idea why NA head is more costly to mod. This is Madzuki(Iain) web site. He is a very experienced tuner and people from teamswift will agree with his knowledge.

For Turbo, I think you can use this method to reduce CR for std engine.
I'm sure you need to en-large exhaust port to flow better for the charger.

Anyway, for turbo head less time will take. For NA, much longer than you can imagine!
This is my cylinder head which is modified by my friend for my requested spec.

please explain waht you mean by de shrouding the valves as in de cokeing ? i dont mesure comp ratio before and after as i normally want less however i wil always get a head just surface ground when its off if requested

Hi Steve,

By meaning de-shrouding is that where valves are.
Sometimes valves have material close by which you can grind away to breath better. Just think it as you have a valve and 3mm away, there is a wall of material. If you remove this material to chamber shape, you have a better breathing valve. Hence better performance.

For NA, after this treatment for your head you will need to measure chamber capacity. You are taking material away to breath better so you will need to skim/machine to bring up CR.

Even for Turbo head, you want all of chamber volume to be same.
So you better off measuring each chamber them grind away more to match all of cylinders.

I hope you understood what I'm saying!

Cheers

ahhhh your talking about the valve throat yes depending on the setup i will remove this material and yes i mesure the diameter of each port while doing this some avoid this to have a step down before the combustion chamber for forced induction i remove it i prefer a bit more mass as enough velocity is gained from the boost

ah no your not just read it agin and answer is no i dont grind into the combustion chambers at all i only polish them up on gti heads the only real are i focus on is the exhaust port
