Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
whats wrong with yours atm?
if you dont mind getting your hands dirty then you can use some 3cyl parts and the shorter cwp

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
Fitted with lsd, guy who sold it had "rebuilt it" I am not convinced!
Need a nice std box to go in whilst I get the current one sorted.

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
so whats wrong with it?
wont go in gear, grinding noise?
if you do need some syncs i would serously think about getting a good 3cyl box and use all the syncs and bearings if you need them, you can also use the 4.4 cwp from the box at the same time
i did have a 4.7 in mine but its way to short for the road, i dont know why suzuki didnt use a 4.4 from the start

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
Thanks Gary,
thats useful info about the diff ratio etc.
My box works fine, though 3rd is a little vague sometimes - difficult to find the gate, maybe can sort with a re-do of the linkage?
Just having the tracking done, apparently this is even more crucial with an lsd - it leaps all over the place at the moment!
I presume that a 1ltr box is easier to get hold of?
Is it strong enough for a gti power output??

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
i know what you mean about the diff, i have a gripper, just hold on and floor it
i hope your getting it done on a 4 wheel dish setup, as they are the most acurate
it sounds like the shift forks could be very worn, you can use them from the 3cyl box aswell
the 3cyl box is exactly the same as the gti box but 3rd, 4th, 5th, cwp are different ratios plus the diff is a bit weaker, apart from those you can use everything else in there, and the cwp of course
dont bother with the 8v box as all you can use are the syncs and bearings, the cwp is about 3.9 i cant remember exactly, and i doubt you`l find a low milage one either

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
Gary,
thanks thats really useful info.
Everybody says "hang-on and floor it", just talking to a guy this morning about it!
4-wheel setup: he said is a "must do" too, otherwise the rear end steers.
Tech stuff: Thats really useful thanks, I presume that the 3-cyl you refer to is a more modern version??
What do I look out for?
(The production run on the Swifts must be one of the longest ever!!)
Thanks,
Simon

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
the hold on rule dusnt apply to small salty wet roundabouts as i found out last nite
i think i went to early
salt reduces grip on a wet road by a 3rd, take note people
yup the 4 wheel is must do belive, my local centre is £25 and it will even give you a printout of all the track, camber, castor, toe, its an amazing bit of kit, you will never go to a dodgy backstreet garage to get it done again
they made 3cyls from the mk1 in 86 but i dont think you could get them over here the mk2 started in 89 and in my eyes atleast didnt stop until 2004, coz its the same chassis, iv seen people calling a mk2 ph3 a mk5!! the only true mk3 is the new shape 2005 onwards coz its a different chassis, but im sure people will say otherwise
iv got a nice little 2000 3cyl down the bottom of the garden waiting to be used as a reshell, if i ever get round to it that is
iv already butcherd the gbox and replaced it with an 8v, just incase

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
I hope you didnt damage the car?!
Thats good value at £25 for the 4-wheel track and all info.
Will look something up, Im only 60 miles from B'mouth anyway.
Have used Triton Motorsports rolling-road at the airport and may do again for the Swift. Andy Vey, really nice guy and knows his cars too, lots of knowledge.

Re: Wanted! Swift gti gearbox
no, just went a bit off line thats all
funny you should say that, last weekend the dorset jap car club did a group rolling session down there
iv done a few changes since the last time
it did 116hp and 107 lb torque down from 126 and 91
down on power but up a fair bit on torque
i raised comp and changed to a 4-2-1 ex mani
the place i get my susp setup is christchurch tyre company

Thanks for that Gary.
Remember their old place but know where new one is too.
Torque is good for road / rally!
