Idleing problem! Empty Idleing problem!

Hi all.
I've recently bought a 1989 mk2. It was idling all over the place. Then the engine management light turned on so I checked the code. It indicated the am sensor. So I changed it. It is now revving as normal but, It cuts out when you take your foot off the gas and let the revs go down. It is also missing at the lower revs and smells like its running rich. I checked the diagnostic and it is indicating OK. I fiddled with the throttle position screw but had no luck. What could it be?

have you tryed cleaning it?
could be a dodgey wire on the sensor plug, take off the rubber cover if all 3 are connected then wigle the wire down its length
if your realy desperate there is a bypass screw at the back of the tb it might have a black cover on it, should be slotted for a flat screwdriver
it controls the amount of air going to the cold start and idle control valves
